Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great way for those who are missing teeth to restore their oral health. A dental implant will give your jaw stability and provide comfort when speaking or eating. Dental implants are as close to a natural tooth as you can get.

What Are Dental Implants?dental implant example

Dental implants look like screws and are used as anchors for the false tooth that will be installed on top of it. They are made to replace the root of your natural tooth and can be used in both the upper and the lower parts of the jaw. In most cases, implants are crafted from titanium, but they can also be made from other human safe materials. Implants are attached to the bone in the jaw and surrounded by your gum tissue to create a solid based upon which to place a crown or other artificial replacement.

Dentists have been using dental implants in patients for decades. They have been used to replace broken, rotten, or missing teeth in people of all ages. Implants and crowns help to restore the ability to chew, talk and to help maintain proper jaw structure.

How Are Implants Installed?

Most implants take about 6 months for total treatment and installation in a three-part process. The first part of the process involves one of the dental surgeons here at Weston Dental Office installing the implant directly into your jaw bone. The top of the implant will crest just above the bone followed by a surgical screw that will prevent the area from being soiled by debris. Once the implant is placed, it will be covered by the gums for anywhere from 3 to 5 months so that the osseointegration process can occur.

After the implant has fused with the bone, our dentist will uncover it and attach a post to the implant. Once the post is placed, the gums around the area will need to heal prior to the artificial tooth being installed. In some cases, a second procure that connects the post to the artificial tooth, but in most cases, the implant, and post are a single unit.

Once those steps are complete, our dentist will fit a customized crown over the area. This will have the same look, feel, and color of your natural teeth.

In general, dental implants may be right for you:

  • If you have one or more missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that is reached full growth
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear denture.
  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Don’t have health conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Have an adequate bone to support the implant or are able to have a bone graft.
