Is It Ok to Drink Coffee After a Tooth Extraction?

Can Drink Coffee After Tooth Extraction

Getting a tooth removed in a dental office can be painful, uncomfortable and downright irritating. As difficult as this procedure may be, a tooth extraction is essential in helping you get one step closer to healthy, beautiful teeth.

The good news is that after everything is said and done, you can relax and let your mouth heal. To many people, relaxing includes indulging in delicious beverages, such as coffee. This leads us to the question we want to answer here at Weston Dental Office: Is it okay to drink coffee after an extraction?

The Answer

In general, we recommend that you do not drink coffee for at least a few days after a tooth extraction. The main reason we advise against it is due to the risk coffee poses on the overall healing process.

If you have made sure to properly follow all of your dentist’s instructions on how to let your extraction heal, you should be completely fine to drink coffee around two days after the procedure. If you want to be on the safe side, you can wait for two weeks as this is the average time it takes for your mouth to fully recover.

If you experience any pain or swelling and your mouth does not seem to be healing properly, be sure to contact your dental professional right away so you can be sure your treatment area is not infected.

Eating & Drinking Tips For Healing

We hope that our answer to the previous question has not made you jump to conclusions — no dental professional in their right mind would recommend you fast after an extraction. Eating and drinking is an important facet of everyday life, there are just certain directions you should follow when you are healing from a procedure such as this:

  • Do NOT drink through a straw, use tobacco or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours.
  • Don’t start rinsing your mouth with saltwater until the day after your extraction.
  • For the first 24 hours, avoid any type of intense exercise. This type of activity will redirect blood from the treatment site, causing a delay in healing.
