Types of Braces: The Pros and Cons

Types Of Braces Pros And Cons

If you or anyone you know has been looking to get braces, it’s important that you know as much as possible about this dental aid in order to make the best decision for your needs. As years have gone by and the dental industry has improved on its original methods, more and more types of braces have come into the limelight.

Consequently, with all of these new options available, it may become more challenging to determine which set of braces is best suited to your teeth.

Here at Weston Dental Office, we want to talk about some of the most common braces that people will end up getting, as well as the pros and cons for each one. This way, you can get a better idea as to which ones you want to be wearing to align your teeth to absolute perfection.

Metal Braces

Out of all the types of braces you could possibly get, these are likely the ones you’ve heard the most about. For years, metal braces have been considered a staple for hundreds of thousands of young men and women around the world. If you have not heard of them or you simply don’t know much about them, metal braces are when small pieces of metal are secured to each tooth and further attached together, one-by-one, with a band that goes around the entire set of your teeth. This device works to straighten out the teeth and get rid of any crookedness.

The Pros

There’s a reason why these braces have done so well over the years, and it’s because they come with a lot of advantages. Some of these pros include:

  • They are smaller than most other braces out there
  • They are comfortable
  • They are generally quite affordable
  • They offer highly effective, transformative results

The Cons

Like everything, these metal braces wouldn’t come without cons. Some of the drawbacks to this type of brace include:

  • Not as visually aesthetic (they stand out quite a lot)
  • Difficult to clean/maintain
  • Can cause periodontal problems if patient has poor dental hygeine

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces (also commonly known as clear braces) are braces that are made out of a clear, tooth coloured material. While the general shape and size are very similar to that of metal braces, the colour of these braces make them much less visible.

The Pros

  • They are much more aesthetically pleasing
  • They are less visible (to some, less of an eyesore)
  • They can be done for teens and young adults
  • They are more affordable than aligners, but offer the same type of look as aligners.

The Cons

  • These braces are bulkier than metal braces
  • They’re at a much higher risk of getting stained
  • They are not always recommended for people (depending on the specific patient)

Clear Aligners

One of the most popular types of braces that have seen a huge spike in discussion as of recent is that of clear aligners. You may know of the company Invisalign, which commonly distributes these types of aligners to people with dental issues.

The Pros

  • Aligners are so clear they are almost invisible, giving them the one up on both metal braces and ceramic braces.
  • They are easily removable
  • Since they are easily removable, it makes it easier to take care of your teeth
  • They require less dental visits
  • The results can (sometimes) come faster than the results of normal braces

The Cons

  • They are by far the most expensive method of all the types of braces you can get (their quality comes at quite a high price point)
  • They don’t tend to offer much help in terms of certain malocclusions (also known as problems with one’s bite; overbite, underbite etc.)
