Getting any tooth extracted can be quite the intimidating experience, but this is especially true when it comes to one’s wisdom teeth.
Since wisdom teeth are deeply rooted into the gums and jaw in the back of your mouth, they can be a bit more complex to remove. Because of this, you want to be sure you get the work done by the best professionals in the field. But what do you have to expect when it comes to this kind of procedure? What steps of this removal should you be aware of, so as to ease your mind and make you feel more prepared for what’s going to happen?
To learn about wisdom tooth extractions and what’s involved during this procedure, check out the information we here at Weston Dental Office have come up with below.
Steps To Make You Comfortable
Since extractions can be painful (especially when they are performed on new, healthy teeth), dental professionals will do everything that is needed to ensure that a patient feels their most comfortable. This means minimizing any potential pain or discomfort, this way you can go about your procedure relaxed and confident, knowing everything is being done properly.
Before anything, a dentist will be sure to use an anesthetic (whether local or general) to numb the area from the pain. The good news is that almost all extraction procedures are what’s known as “outpatient procedures”, meaning that you can leave a wisdom tooth extraction on the same day. Because of the type of anesthetic that is used, however, you must go to a wisdom tooth extraction with someone who is able to drive you home afterwards, as the anesthetic used often affects your cognitive/motor ability for a while after extraction.
Surgical extractions, on the other hand, use general anesthetic. This means that you will be knocked out for the entirety of the procedure, not awake to experience any of it. Luckily, this type of extraction is very rare and usually never the case when it comes to wisdom teeth removals.
The Procedure
Once the area has been numbed/you’ve been given anesthetic, the dentist will make small incisions along the gum line to get a better idea of where the tooth lies. In some cases, the removal of a bit of jaw bone may be required to loosen the tooth. Once this is complete, a special device will be used to properly and quickly remove the tooth.
The removal of a tooth (and especially a large tooth such as a wisdom tooth) will leave a large, open hole in your gum. This gap will be stitched together and covered with gauze to stop the bleeding from being too excessive. Making sure this area is 100% clean before stitching & gauzing will be important, however. This way, there is little to no chance of infection.
